On June 14–15, Illia Tkachenko, Research Coordinator of the BRIDGE project, took part in the Urban Hackathon in the Sykhiv district of Lviv as part of the international initiative UREHERIT – Architects for Heritage in Ukraine: Recreating Identity and Memory, supported by the Creative Europe programme.
UREHERIT is a three-year cultural project that brings together European and Ukrainian architectural and research institutions around a holistic approach to post-war recovery. Its focus lies in rethinking modernist heritage, strengthening local communities, and fostering Ukraine’s democratic transformation. Project partners include: the Lithuanian Union of Architects (lead coordinator), the Estonian Association of Architects, the Royal Danish Academy, ro3kvit, the Kharkiv School of Architecture, and others.
The two-day hackathon in Lviv was dedicated to exploring strategies for renewing Soviet-era residential districts. The event brought together more than 30 participants from Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, and Ukraine — primarily students from architecture and urbanism programs, local government representatives, and residents of Sykhiv. Working in mixed teams, participants developed a wide range of solutions — from architectural approaches to models of community engagement in urban revitalization processes.

As part of the hackathon, Illia Tkachenko presented the BRIDGE project, highlighting:
- the project’s goals and the upcoming citizens’ assembly in Zhytomyr;
- the foundations of deliberation as a tool for civic participation in decision-making;
- the potential of citizens’ assemblies to strengthen trust between local authorities and communities in urban planning.
We thank Illia Tkachenko for representing BRIDGE on this international platform, and the organizers of the Urban Hackathon for the invitation, their openness to interdisciplinary exchange, and the inspiring atmosphere of collaboration.
